Want to do something surprising for your son or daughter this Halloween? Something they will remember and that may just be categorized as a Halloween tradition later on? Fortunately, surprising your child isn’t as difficult as you think.

Here are some ideas:

  • Take them out to dinner dressed in Halloween attire, instead of doing the standard chili and bread sticks at home. Dress up yourself and make it a family affair.
  • Do a little trick. Remember when you were a teenager and did those tricks, and not always on Halloween? Surprise your child with a bean at the end of the tube of toothpaste or his entire breakfast colored in orange or black.

  • Let your child help you choose and place the outside decor for your house. Go a step further by offering to give a free spook alley for the trick-or-treaters.
  • Take your child to a mall to do your trick-or-treating. Malls have two great conveniences: The first, you get out of the cold. Second, there’s no need to worry about the treats they might be getting.
  • Trunk-or-Treat is increasing in popularity. Instead of your child going door-to-door, take them to a trunk-or-treat event at your local school or church. These events are held out-of-doors and children walk from trunk to trunk to get their treats.

The best news is that surprising your child this Halloween has more to do with your own ingenuity and less with budgeting the money you may need to do it.

Working at Home with Kids

Working at home with a child is possible. However, it does require discipline and a strong motivation on your part – after all, it’s really easy to get caught up in playing with children instead of getting any work done!

  1. Work around your child’s schedule. Until you have children that can keep themselves entertained for short periods alone, you will probably need to work before they wake up and after they fall asleep at night. Everyone’s situation is different, and you may find that it’s easier to work in the morning instead of at night, or vice versa. Sometimes, it can be helpful to allow your children to sleep in a little bit later than usual, or send them to bed at an earlier time.
  2. Nap when your children sleep. If you’re trying to get work done before the children wake up or after they go down for bedtime, it can be easy to fall into the trap of not getting enough sleep. Unfortunately, zero sleep also means less concentration and quality when it comes to work. Try to catch a quick cat nap while the kids are sleeping instead of working through their naptime.
  3. Don’t overwork yourself. This is one of the most important things to remember, your relationship with your children and your work will suffer. Take time for yourself, like surfing the internet, or catching up on your favorite reality shows at http://www.direct.tv.
