Working at home with a child is possible. However, it does require discipline and a strong motivation on your part – after all, it’s really easy to get caught up in playing with children instead of getting any work done!
- Work around your child’s schedule. Until you have children that can keep themselves entertained for short periods alone, you will probably need to work before they wake up and after they fall asleep at night. Everyone’s situation is different, and you may find that it’s easier to work in the morning instead of at night, or vice versa. Sometimes, it can be helpful to allow your children to sleep in a little bit later than usual, or send them to bed at an earlier time.
- Nap when your children sleep. If you’re trying to get work done before the children wake up or after they go down for bedtime, it can be easy to fall into the trap of not getting enough sleep. Unfortunately, zero sleep also means less concentration and quality when it comes to work. Try to catch a quick cat nap while the kids are sleeping instead of working through their naptime.
- Don’t overwork yourself. This is one of the most important things to remember, your relationship with your children and your work will suffer. Take time for yourself, like surfing the internet, or catching up on your favorite reality shows at http://www.direct.tv.
If you decide to work out of your house while your children are growing up you will be able to catch valuable moments in their life – after all, you only get to live through it once!
